McLaren Vale wines are from South Australia, just a short drive south of Adelaide. While it shares a state with some well-known wine-growing regions, most notably the Barossa Valley, these deserve a category all of their own. Predominantly they produce red wines in the region, and of these, the Shiraz is certainly the standout. The McLaren Valley is home to about a hundred different wineries and is often the destination of the wine tour that is tired of the beaten track and just wants to sample some premium red wines. The soil conditions available and the cool weather is near perfect for growing wine-producing grapes. The region itself is home to about seven and half thousand hectares of planted vineyards, with the first vines being planted in 1838 by John Reynell and Thomas Hardy.
There are new and interesting McLaren Vale wines vintages being released each year. Usually, the best vintages are when the growing conditions have been very favourable, but with most years you’ll get an excellent bottle of wine that truly showcases exactly what this region has to offer. To explore the offerings that you’ll get from the McLaren Vale we’d suggest starting with Laughing Jack, Millon Wines, or 19 Crimes. At Bottle Stop we keep a good amount of wine from the McLaren Vale in stock, and we can ship these out directly to you. In addition to having many different Australian wines available, we also sell beer, brandy, gin, liqueurs, rum, vodka, and whiskey.
What does McLaren Vale wine taste like?
The McLaren Vale region consists mostly of wineries that produce Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wines, along with the occasional Chardonnay. However, when people speak about McLaren Vale wines they are usually talking about the red wines and in particular the Shiraz. In this area, it has a similar climate to what you’d find in most Mediterranean wine-growing regions. So naturally, the Shiraz was a perfect fit. As such the wines you get in this area share similarities to the old world wines that you’ll find in lower France, Spain, and Italy.
The Shiraz that you’ll get with McLaren Vale wines, has flavours of deep and rich red berries, with the occasional hint of blackberry, black pepper, nutmeg, and cloves. The majority of these complex flavours is due to the growing region (also known as the terroir). With cool nights in the fruiting months, it allows grapes to naturally develop slowly over time. This increases the flavours inside and that in turn gives the wine its unique and interesting flavour combination. The food that you can pair with Shiraz include dark roasted meats, and in particular, you’ll find local Kangaroo goes extremely well, especially when properly prepared with a dark rich sauce.
If a Shiraz is not to your liking, but you still want to find out what McLaren Vale wines are all about, we’d suggest looking at the Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, or Grenache wines. These all share the same space and are harvested at different times of the year. You’ll find that the Cabernet Sauvignon is quite flavourful with blackcurrant and notes of dark chocolate. The Chardonnay is the largest white wine produced in the area and can have flavours of melon, and other tropical fruits, finishing with slightly nutty overtones. The Grenache can contain flavours of plum and mulberry, with tobacco and mint. However, if the growing season has been quite wet you may not find a Grenache vintage for that year, so it’s best to get them while you can.
