Margaret River wines include some very unique and special offerings from many different wineries in this region. The crowning gem of the region is often the Cabernet Sauvignon, which some say rivals McLaren Vale wines, they also produced some top quality white wines. The Chardonnay is a particular specialty of the region and is offered by many of the local wineries. Although the region is only young when talking about the age of wineries, it has established itself as an excellent proving ground for the development of truly world-class wines.
Located on the West Australian coast about a three-hour drive from Perth, it occupies an area of roughly a hundred kilometres from Cape Leeuwin to Cape Naturaliste. It is a very popular location for tourists all hoping to sample some of the premium blends the wineries can offer. The history of Margaret River wines in the region actually started in the 1830s, but the wines were not incredibly successful outside the local area until the 1950s. The main problem for Margaret River wines is their isolation, proving it difficult to get these wines out into the border drinking community, so for many years it remained closed off and enjoyed by locals in secrecy.

What does Margaret river wine taste like?
You’ll find an excellent selection of different Margaret River wines available from the region. However, of these, it is the Cabernet Sauvignon that is the most popular, shortly followed by the Chardonnay. Although they also have some brilliant examples of Shiraz, Rose, and Sauvignon Blanc. As you can find a good mix of red and white wines in the region you are actually quite spoiled for choice, especially if you have a preference for either red or white wine.
A good quality red wine will pair incredibly well with an assortment of dark roasted meats. You’ll notice the Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaret River will have flavours of black cherry, dark plums, and liquorice with a hint of mint. While the food you serve is integral to getting the best out of it, look to match it with a dark and rich sauce over any meat of your choosing, although lean Kangaroo is a brilliant choice. For the lighter Chardonnay, you’ll experience flavours of apple, lemon, and an assortment of tropical fruits. These are considered to be quite dry and will help bring out the flavours of most shellfish and other fish-based dishes. It is also excellent with cream-based sauces and light pastas.
What is the ideal drinking temperature for Margaret river wines?
In the past, it was believed that red wine should be served at room temperature, and whites needed to be quite cold. However, all of this has changed and it is recommended that most wines be served at cool temperatures. For many red wines they should be served at 16oC-18oC, an easy way to tell is the lighter the red wine the cooler it needs to be, so a Pinot Noir can be served at a colder temperature than a Shiraz. For the Chardonnay from the Margaret River region, it is recommended to serve it at 10oC-12oC.
You can easily cool down Margaret River wines by placing them in the kitchen fridge, just use a timer to make sure you get it to the right temperature (about 90 minutes for heavy reds, and 45 minutes for light reds and white wines). After it is at the temperature, open them up and let them breathe for around ten minutes before serving for the perfect drinking experience. If you need to keep any leftover wine, replace the cork and place it in the fridge, white wines will keep for about 2-3 days, and red 3-5, although this depends on how much oxidation has occurred while the bottle was open.
