What is the meaning of single malt whisky?
The idea of a single malt whisky is that the drink you're drinking is all made from the same distillery, the same malt. There are different naming regulations for the different whiskies, depending how they are made and what they are made from.
How is single malt whisky made?
When a malt whisky is made, malted barley is fermented first before being distilled to concentrate the flavours and the alcohol of the whisky. It's then aged in oak barrels to refine and develop its flavour profile. A blended whisky is made from different blends which may have come from another distillery, another aged scotch, or even another grain. There are specific classes of Scotch alcohol to help you navigate your way through this highly detailed and regulated industry.
Single malt Scotch has slowly developed a very interesting marketing profile over the last half century or so. It's often considered to be the more flavourful and, generally, the better whisky to have but this isn't necessarily true. There are many blended malt Scotch varieties which produce beautiful flavours, smooth and silky finishes, and complex tasting notes because they have specifically been formulated with the blend recipe in mind. Using Scotch and whiskies from different casks or of a different age can create all kinds of aromatics and tastes in much the same way that blended rum and blended brandy can develop superior tasting notes.
A single malt whisky is, perhaps, the most pure malt Scotch experience that you can buy, for whatever value the word pure' really has. If you are looking for a classical single malt Scotch taste, and they do taste good, then opting for a single malt whisky could be the way to go. Don't dismiss the blends out of hand. Try a few blends out as well, and experiment with the age of the Scotch that you're tasting. When searching for a blend there are some things which you should know. In Scotland, where whisky comes from (they choose not to add the e' that the Irish do), the Scotch whisky regulations dictate the forms of blends as follows:
A blended malt Scotch Whisky means a blend of two or more single malt whiskies which have been distilled at more than one distillery. A blended grain whisky means a blend of two or more single grain Scotch whiskies that have been distilled at more than one distillery. Rye is another grain that whisky can be made from. A blended Scotch whisky means a blend of one or more single malt whiskies and one of more single grain whiskies.
Other excellent countries showing considerably popularity and finesse with their whisky distillation include Japan. Japanese single malt whisky is made just like the more well-known and traditional Highland Scotch kind, all from the same malted barley and made in the same distillery. They are renowned for their natural smokiness and creamy finish.
Some other things which you may not but probably should know when you're hunting out the next whisky to try is the term cask strength. This refers to the alcoholic content of the particular whisky that you're considering and refers to higher proof content that the standard 40% ABV bottling strength.
In order for a single malt Scotch whisky to be so called, not only does it need to all be made from the same malted barley at the same distillery, it also must be aged for a minimum of three years in oak casks before it can be bottled. Single malt whisky aged for decades is often lauded as the best available to have and it's certainly going to have a heft price tag. However, it should be noted that aging a whisky for more than a couple of decades does not actually affect the tasting notes any more and the whisky does not age at all in the bottle. If you purchased a 12 year old single malt whisky a very nice bottle today it would have aged the same amount as a 12 year old single malt whisky recently unearthed from beneath an ancient abbey in Scotland. Despite the intervening centuries in a glass bottle, they are actually considered to be of the same age.
