German style pilsner is a light straw colour and usually marked by a particularly bitter or earthy taste while the original Czech style is known to be golden, foamy and lighter tasting. American style pilsner are a bit more robust, like an IPA. These will have a stronger malt flavour and typically have about 6.5% to 9% ABV. They're also described as a bit spicier than the European types.
