This Viognier was grown in the renowned Malakoff Vineyard in the Pyrenees, western Victoria. With La Niña persisting, a cool spring and mild summer once more predominated, so it was another cool vintage with reduced crop levels providing good concentration, aided by a long growing season. Grapes were hand harvested in the cool of the morning at optimum flavour ripeness. The fruit was gently whole bunch pressed and left to settle overnight prior to racking to old French oak barrels. Wild fermentation occurred at cooler temperatures to retain fruit aromas. After primary ferment, it was left on light lees for 7 months to further develop complexity and palate weight prior to bottling in November 2022.
Aromas of dried apricots, candied ginger and rockmelon with nuances of lees-derived complexity. Mandarin and mango skin frame an opulent palate. Some nougat and lees-derived characters add further richness. Powerful, spicy finish. - Al Timms, Shadowfax
