Stomping Ground Brewing Co is a Collingwood brewery and beer hall, and Bunker Porter is one of the beers their regulars ask after by name. It comes back as a limited release rather than sitting in the core range year round, which is part of the appeal.
It pours close to black beneath a dense coffee coloured head that leaves lacing all the way down the glass. The aroma opens sweet, with milk chocolate and cocoa over a gentle roasted edge and a hint of molasses as it warms.
The palate is rich and layered: dark chocolate and dried fruit lead into mild coffee, roasted nuts and a touch of treacle, before a leathery dryness pulls the sweetness back and carries through to a toffee and mocha finish. Best enjoyed a little warmer than fridge cold so the chocolate and roast characters come forward.
