Wayward Brewing Co operates out of Annandale in Sydney's inner west, and Peaches and Cream is the brewery at its most indulgent. It is a fruited sour built to taste like the lolly it takes its name from.
A generous helping of real peach puree goes into the brew, and the beer pours hazy and golden, roughly the colour of peach flesh. The nose is unmistakable: candied stone fruit and vanilla, with the ripe Australian grown fruit leading.
The creaminess comes from lactose and a touch of vanilla, which give it a silky, velvety mouthfeel and soften the lactic tang of the base beer. The result is juicy and gently tart, sweet and sour in careful balance, closer to an ice cream sundae than a traditional sour.
