Born in 1857 in regional Victoria, Castlemaine Brewers launched the XXXX brand in Castlemaine in 1924. XXXX gets its name from a time when the number of Xs on a beer label illustrated how strong the beer was. Pronounced four-ex, XXXX is super popular in Queensland and still features the Castlemaine name on its yellow-and-red label. It is brewed today by Castlemaine Perkins brewery in Milton, just an 8 minute drive from Brisbane CBD. XXXX GOLD is a 3.5% ABV crushable, full-flavoured, mid-strength Aussie lager that's made with Queensland cane sugar, Australian malted barley, pure local water and brewery-grown Golden Cluster hops & yeast.
