Master Distiller Basil Hayden Sr. broke the mould in 1796 when he decided that a small amount of rye added to traditional corn mash would add a spiciness to Beam bourbon and help balance the sweetness of the corn. The rest as they say is history and virtually everyone now follows his ideas. The range of bourbons Beam created to honour his name are no less inspiring than the man himself. Allowed to mature at a mild 40% ABV it has a flavour reminiscent of peppermint candies with touches of black pepper, citrus fruits and a warm spicy finish that lasts for days.

very nice, unique

Personally I love Basil Hayden. It is softer on the palette mixed with Coke with a strong caramel taste but I think it's an elegant and sophisticated palette. Not for everyone perhaps but I think the flavour profile is delicious. By contrast I've found a few highly rated bourbons boring and disappointing mixed with Coke which is the only way I drink bourbon. Namely Knob Creek, Willet pot, the standard Blanton's and Weller Reserve. I suspect the glowing reviews for all are based on their being drunk as a sipping bourbon on ice but I found all four boring mixed with Coke. I do like a good, strong, classic bourbon taste as well such as Russel's Reserve which I think is fantastic and by far one of the best within the price range but so long as you have a taste for a softer, more sophisticated pallette mixed with Coke that is unusual for a bourbon, you may really like Basil Hayden.

Weak waste of money

Weak tasting. Really disappointing for the price. Jim Beam white label tastes better and that says it all. Don't waste your money.

Flavourless bourbon!!

Very light tasting bourbon, like water. Not a great offering from Jim Beam. There are better bourbons out there at a similar price.
