Brasserie d'Achouffe began in 1982 with a tiny 49-litre brew in the village of Achouffe, deep in the Belgian Ardennes, and its gnome-adorned beers are now known around the world. Cherry Chouffe is the brewery's take on a Belgian fruit beer, made by adding sour cherries to a dark Chouffe ale during maturation.
It pours a dark red with a fine head of foam. Ripe cherries lead the way on the nose, joined by hints of strawberry, almond and a touch of spice. The palate is round and balanced, with the fruit offset by a pleasant bitterness that keeps it from becoming overly sweet. It was awarded a gold medal at the 2020 World Beer Awards.
Cherry Chouffe is a great match for duck breast, stewed game or dishes featuring red cabbage, fennel or roasted red peppers, and it also pairs nicely with desserts built around cherries, raspberries, strawberries or almonds.
