Hoegaarden is the original Belgian wheat beer, named after the village in Flanders where its story began. Around 1445, local monks began adding Curaçao orange peel and coriander to their wheat beer, creating a style that thrived until the village's last brewery closed in 1957. In 1965, milkman Pierre Celis revived the recipe in his milk shed, and Hoegaarden has been a benchmark witbier ever since.
Brewed with wheat, orange peel and coriander and left unfiltered, it pours a naturally cloudy pale gold. Soft wheat, fresh citrus and earthy coriander come through on the nose and palate, carried by a delicately creamy body and a crisp, clean finish.
Serve well chilled in Hoegaarden's signature hexagonal glass: pour two-thirds, swirl to lift the yeast, then top up. It pairs beautifully with grilled white fish, citrus-dressed salads, guacamole and lighter savoury dishes.
