Duchesse de Bourgogne is a celebrated Flanders red ale from Brouwerij Verhaeghe, a family brewery founded in 1875 in Vichte, West Flanders. The beer takes its name from Mary of Burgundy, the only daughter of Charles the Bold, whose portrait graces the label.
Brewed with roasted malts and low-bitterness hops, it goes through a mixed fermentation before spending months maturing in oak casks, where a secondary fermentation takes place. The finished beer is a blend of younger and older oak-aged ales, and the oak tannins help shape its distinctive fruity character.
In the glass it is a deep ruby red and full-bodied. The palate is sweet, fruity and fresh, with the gentle tartness the style is known for, leading into a pleasantly refreshing finish. Serve in a chalice at 8 to 12°C.
