Gouden Carolus Classic originates from the rich brewing tradition of Mechelen, where each Belgian city historically boasted its own breweries and distinctive city beers. In Mechelen, the local populace favored "den Mechelschen Bruynen." During its tenure as the capital of the Netherlands, Mechelen sustained a brewer's guild committed to crafting exceptional beer for the Emperor. Historical chronicles from Mechelen recount that the Grand Imperial Beer, named "Gouden Carolus" after Emperor Charles's golden coins, was a favored beverage during fox hunts, energizing both riders and their horses, thus ensuring the hunt proceeded in an optimal atmosphere.

This distinguished "Grand Imperial Beer" continues to be produced at the Het Anker brewery in Mechelen.
