Nikka From The Barrel is one of the most celebrated blends in Japanese whisky, drawing together malt whisky from Nikka's Yoichi distillery and grain whisky from Miyagikyo. More than one hundred constituent whiskies, matured in a range of casks including bourbon barrels, sherry butts and refill hogsheads, are married together and returned to oak for a further period of marrying before bottling. This second maturation is where the whisky takes its name, allowing the components to fuse into a single, wonderfully cohesive character of remarkable depth.
It pours a deep amber and opens with an inviting nose of butterscotch, caramel and orange peel, layered with sherried sweetness, vanilla and gentle candied fruit. The palate is rich and full, leading with honey and caramel before unfolding into oak spice, ginger and dried fruits, with warming hints of cinnamon, nutmeg and spiced chocolate. The finish is long and generous, carrying rich caramel, spicy oak and a faint wisp of smoke that lingers pleasantly.
Powerful yet beautifully balanced, this is a whisky that rewards unhurried sipping. Enjoy it neat to appreciate its full intensity, or add a few drops of water to coax out its sweeter, more delicate notes. It also makes a superb base for an elevated Old Fashioned or a stirred Japanese-inspired cocktail.
