Maison Martell was founded in Cognac in 1715 by Jean Martell, a young merchant from the Channel Island of Jersey, making it the oldest of the great cognac houses. Three centuries on it remains one of the big four alongside Hennessy, Remy Martin and Courvoisier, and has been part of Pernod Ricard since 2001. The house draws its eaux-de-vie from vineyards across the Charente.
VSOP sits a step above VS in the Martell range, blended from eaux-de-vie with a minimum of four years in cask. The colour is a warm copper with gold glints, and the nose opens on ripe yellow fruits such as mirabelle plum, greengage, apricot and vine peach. The palate is round and balanced, with dried fruit and cream giving way to soft baking spice, toasted oak and a gentle peppery lift on the finish.
Martell is the only major cognac house to double distil exclusively clear wines, removing the lees before distillation to keep the fruit aromatics bright and the spirit fine. Maturation for this expression takes place in fine grain Troncais oak casks, the red barrels of the name, chosen at a stage where the wood has already given up its harsher tannins and lends structure and spice rather than heavy oak.
