From Brouwerij De Halve Maan in the centre of Bruges, a family brewery owned by the Maes family since 1856, Straffe Hendrik Tripel is regarded by the brewery as one of the most characterful tripels in Belgium. The Straffe Hendrik name, meaning "Strong Hendrik", honours the many Henris in the family line.
Heavily hopped and built on a subtle blend of special malts, it delivers a powerful yet balanced flavour. Refermentation in the bottle gives it a naturally long life. It pours a clear amber blond under a firm white head, with a spicy aroma of black pepper, ginger and a hint of orange.
The palate moves from caramel into a pronounced bitterness, finishing with subtle notes of banana and citrus. Serve at around 6°C alongside spicy fish dishes, cheeses or light desserts.
