Straffe Hendrik Quadrupel is brewed by Brouwerij De Halve Maan, the family brewery that has stood in the historic heart of Bruges since 1856 and is now run by the sixth generation of the Maes family. The Straffe Hendrik range, meaning "Strong Hendrik" in honour of the many Henris in the family, was created in 1981, and the brewery describes this Quadrupel as the first Belgian Quadrupel ever made.
Brewed with a refined mix of special malts, it pours an intense dark brown. The nose is spicy and elegant with gently roasted hints, while the rich, full-bodied palate shows a clean dryness layered with coriander, dark fruit, anise and roasted chestnut, before a slightly treacly finish.
Serve at around 8°C. Its depth of flavour stands up to bold dishes such as red meat and game, and it is a superb match for chocolate desserts.
